Purpose. The aim of modern and conservative treatment of glaucoma is keeping the concentration of the effective agent as low as possible and vehicle should be tissus – friendly and can provide a long term efficacy. Such as the betoptic –S 0,25 % eye-drops, which contain mannite, polystyren sulfo-acid and carbomer as vehicle. The eye-drops, contain the Betaxolol hydrochloride, relative beta-blocker in 0,25 % concentration instead of the generally used 0,5 % volume, and the polymer vehicle takes care of the anterior surface of the eyeball due to the longer contact period, and its effect on eye pressure decreasing is the longer contact period, more concentrated substances.
Methods. The aim of the clinical study is putting betoptic-S eye-drops to the clinical test and comparing the results to the experiences related to betoptic eye-drops of the glaucoma outpatient clinic. The study is running on the 50 patient suffering from primary open angle glaucoma ; basic examination : visual acuity, visual field (Octopus EZ 500 Gl program). Measurement of IOP at least three times at the same time with Goldman aplanatic tonometer. Slit lamp examination, chamber examination, fundus examination respective by fundus photo, probe schirmer, break up time. 2. After one week and after one month and after three months.
Results. All drugs showed significant reduction in intraocular pressure during the day and 3 months. Any of the drugs showed a significant reduction in tear production and quality.
Conclusion. Because of its efficacy and realiability, Betaxolol seems to be a selective hypotensive agent in patients especially with cardio-selective problems.
