Purpose. We have compared the endothelial cell density after Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) and Deep lamellar keratoplasty (DLKP) to verify which surgical procedure is more respective of this corneal layer
Methods. we studied the endothelial cell density in a group of 50 patients who underwent DLKP comparing the results with 50 patients who underwent PKP. We evaluated the patients 3, 6, 12 months after surgery. We performed a statistical analysis of the data with 't' test (Student test)
Results. 3 months after DLKP the mean cells count was 2323.47 cell/mm (ds 155.96), and after PKP 949.93 (ds 149.44) ; 6 months after DLKP the mean cells count was 2272.93 (ds 167.37), and after PKP 949.93 (ds 149.44) ; 12 months after DLKP was 2261.03 (ds 161.90), after PKP 939.17 (ds 158.41)
Conclusions. Our results show that there is a significant difference between the two groups of patients since the first three months after the surgery. DLKP is a surgical procedure respective of the recipient endothelial layer so it is to choose instead of PKP in patients with no endothelial damages.
