Résumé |
Introduction |
Conclusions |

Introduction |
The attachment theory has become one of the most important conceptual references for the understanding of human relationships and emotional regulation. Despite significant research data on attachment over the past three decades with children and young adults, there was little attention to the study of attachment in the elderly. Therefore, this study aimed to explore representations of attachment, satisfaction with life and coping strategies in the elderly.
Methods |
Our study was transversal, descriptive and analytical; it was conducted with front-line consultants, older than 65 years at the hospital Bouzayen Menzel, Sidi Bouzid in the center of Tunisia. The attachment representations were assessed using the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ) and Adult Attachment Style. The assessment of life satisfaction was measured by life satisfaction scale (ESDV-5). Coping strategies have been explored by Brief Cope Carver.
Results |
According to the Adult Attachment Questionnaire, 72.2% had a secure attachment style, 24.4% had an avoidant attachment style and 3.3% had an anxious-ambivalent attachment style. The analytical study showed that insecure attachment is correlated with poor satisfaction of marital life, traumatic experiences during childhood, experience of loss of a child, poor life satisfaction and of coping strategies focused on emotion.
Conclusions |
The results suggest that the model of Bowlby's attachment that would condition the functioning of the individual still be operating in the elderly. Thus, a secure attachment is likely to constitute a protective factor contributing to a better quality of life. Conversely, insecurity could be a vulnerability factor impairing the quality of life.
