Résumé |
Contexte |
Conclusions |

Context |
Voice disorders in teachers were highlighted in several international studies, justifying the relevance and importance of carrying out actions of prevention in this population.
Purpose of the study |
The goal of this study is to assess how actions of prevention are perceived by teachers enrolled in a preventive voice care program and if results depend on teachers’ age and experience. Dissatisfaction and the declared acquired knowledge at the end of the intervention were analysed.
Method |
For almost fifteen years, MGEN (French social security provider, specialized in teachers’ insurance), in partnership with the French Ministry of Education, offers a preventive voice program that includes voice hygiene education and voice training for teachers of all levels and working areas. At the end of each intervention, an evaluation questionnaire is distributed to participants and the data is then analysed statistically.
Results |
In 2014, 1144 teachers answered the questionnaire, 1012 were validated to final analysis. The population included 81% of women, 54% of the respondents were over 30-years-old, 52% were student teachers, 59% claimed to have already been confronted with a voice problem and amongst them 22% said they had already been unable to teach due to a voice problem. After the intervention, 91% of participants were satisfied with it. A statistically significant difference exists between younger and older teachers in multivariate analysis: younger than 30-years-old teachers are more likely to be dissatisfied (OR=2.54; CI 95%=[1.09–5.92]) and to be in the lowest category of declared knowledge (OR=0.62; CI 95%=[0.41–0.92]). Declare to have already been confronted with a voice problem with impossibility of teaching was also associated with both parameters (less likely to be dissatisfied; highest category of knowledge), but just above the threshold for significance for dissatisfaction.
Conclusions |
Voice programs are pertinent and teachers are highly satisfied after participation. The intervention allows the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Results significantly vary according to the age of teachers: younger teachers are less satisfied and claim to learn less. The principles of vocal hygiene and voice preservation should be given in a long-term perspective. The lack of information and a poor knowledge on the vocal demands of the profession could explain the differences observed.
