Résumé |
Introduction |
Discussion/conclusion |

Introduction |
Information to patients is one aspect of implantable medical device (IMD) traceability. This task can be facilitated by a “patient card” (PC) detailing the mandatory points of traceability. An assessment was conducted to estimate the PC availability for IMD manufacturers.
Method |
In our university hospital, we collected data from 111 suppliers on 62,000 IMDs. The four items of the questionnaire were: current or planned presence of PC; presence of PC in packaging; presence of PC displayed on packaging or in the instructions for use (IFU) and request for a specimen PC.
Results |
Fifty-three companies reported providing a PC. Twenty-one companies are developing PCs, including 67% for release before 2018. Thirty-five companies include their PC in the packaging, 5 display the presence of the PC on the packaging and 16 indicate it in the IFU. Sixty-three PC specimens were received, 68% of which had a place for a traceability label.
Discussion/conclusion |
IMD manufacturers had a broad definition of PCs, making frequent use of “generic” PCs. When present, PCs were usually not well indicated. Manufacturers’ practices do not yet seem to be suited to systematic use of PCs by health-care establishments, awaiting their being made mandatory.
