Conclusion |

A study to determine the impact of therapeutic education in the management of low back pain patients treated by transcutaneous neurostimulation.
Method |
A prospective, randomized study comparing two groups of patients with low back pain with or without radicular pain followed in pain consultation. Patients are randomized either in the control group (n=50) for which the patient is managed according to our usual practice or in the therapeutic education group (n=47) where patients benefit jointly from the medical follow-up, a telephone coaching by nurses and consultations with nurses at 1, 3 and 6 months; a follow-up notebook supported self-evaluation. The criteria used are the satisfaction and adherence to the therapeutic education program.
Results |
All outcomes were similar between groups except for the duration of the consultation and the content of the therapeutic education program at M3. Twenty-two patients (44%) were still assessable at the end-of-study visit, whereas 33 (70%) were assessable at the same time point in the TENS-TEP group (p=0.013).
Conclusion |
Although most criteria are not statistically significant, therapeutic education with nurse coaching appears to enhancce compliance with the treatment.
