Conclusion |

Objective |
School refusal, an important cause of school absenteeism, is a public health problem. The experience of adolescents with school refusal and the experience of their parents remain to this day little explored. The analysis of this experience could provide access to the representations of adolescents and their parents, which could then be taken into account during therapeutic work. The objective of this study was to explore the experiences of adolescents with school refusal, as well as parental experiences, on the representation of the disorder, assumptions about the origins and on the representation of the phenomenology of the school refusal.
Methods |
The study is based on a qualitative phenomenological and an inductive approach. Data collection relied on one semi-structured interviews conducted with ten adolescents aged 14 to 18 and followed in service of pedopsychiatry for a school refusal. Five mothers were also interviewed. No fathers were available to participate in the study. The data analysis has been made with a recognized method, the interpretative phenomenological analysis.
Results |
The thematic phenomenological analysis has highlighted several experience levels regarding these adolescents: a period of adolescence experienced as threatening or even cancelled, an inevitable affective pattern of the schooling, a disorder experienced as incomprehensible and difficult to name. These adolescents question themselves about the etiological hypotheses but the responsibility appears always touched on the outside. Other experience levels appear in parental interviews. There is a difficulty to name and to understand the disorder of their child. In particular, there is uncertainty as to the representation of the disorder as a disease. The consequences of schooling are experienced as a true family cataclysm by these parents. Finally, institutions are perceived as powerless. In particular, care appears to be a tough obstacle course. The participants describe a feeling of dropping by the school, reinforcing their sense of loneliness.
Conclusion |
Our study has emphasized the integration of symptomatology with developmental processes in adolescence. The work in connection with the educational teams is essential to improve the identification of situations and to promote early care. It seems necessary to us to undertake a work on the separation and restoration of thought, through a psychotherapeutic space and mediation.
