Conclusion |

Objective |
To search an association between the psychosocial factors at work and smoking habits among a sample of employees in the building and public works.
Method |
We carried out a cross-sectional study using a pre-tested questionnaire administered to the employees of the construction and public works sector by an interviewer trained beforehand. The questionnaire used included four parts relating to socio-occupational characteristics, smoking habits, assessment of motivation to quit smoking, and assessment of work-related stress using the questionnaire of Karasek.
Results |
One hundred and seventy-four employees participated in the survey. The majority (74.1 %) were on-site employees. Strong psychological demand was noted in 87.9 % of participants, low decision latitude in 63.2 % and lack of social support in 60.9 % of cases. Tobacco smoking was statistically associated with exodus work (OR=2.34, 95 % CI [1.17, 4, 69]), on-site work (OR=7.88, 95 % CI [3.71, 16.74]), the precarious employment (OR=1.43, 95 % CI [1.22, 1, 82]), high psychological demand at work (OR=1.66; 95 % CI [1.19; 1.73]) and lack of social support (OR=1.44; 95 % CI [1.05; 1.50]).
Conclusion |
Degraded working conditions and insecurity in employment influences smoking among employees. Taking these factors into account in helping to stop dependent smokers remains paramount.
