Importance of foot core in combat sports: from pathology to performance

The training load involved in combat sports can lead to pathologies of the lower limbs. The first link in the chain of care, both preventive and curative, involves strengthening the foot. As most combat sports are practised barefoot, foot orthoses are not an appropriate treatment option, hence the importance of foot core rehabilitation, or work on the intrinsic muscles of the foot. This re-education promotes support of the medial longitudinal arch in line with the patient’s morphology, as well as stability and adaptability of the foot to its environment. This reinforcement improves control of foot deformation on impact with the ground, and the restitution of stored energy.
