T06-O-04 Cybersex and new sexual dependencies - 27/06/08
Résumé |
Objectives |
At the present time, besides classical dependencies like alcohol, drugs, etc., new types of behaviour characterized by a dysfunctional use and/or abuse of sexuality have been increasingly emerging. The main objective of the present paper is to examine these new sexual addictions thoroughly, by highlighting the characteristics of these new compulsive pathologies and by indicating the main and discriminating elements of cybersex.
Material and methods |
The paper provides a theoretical contribution to the topic of sexual dependencies. The authors have consulted the main scientific search engines such as Pubmed and PsycoInfo.
Results |
The new information technologies have revolutionized our lives, but they have also introduced new pathologies linked to the problematic use of the Internet (IAD, Internet Addiction Disorders). Specifically, the paper discusses the strong gender implications of cybersex addiction, which implies a pathological and typically sexually related use of the Internet. Among the main technologically mediated interactions we can remember the participation in erotic chat rooms, interactive masturbation, and the use of pornographic material.
Conclusions |
The use of the Web can become the pivotal point in the life of a person so much so that it can completely obscure oneʼs private and relational life and influence negatively oneʼs working performance. It is therefore necessary to improve our knowledge of this new phenomenon and encourage the development of effective interventions.
