The early part of the nineteenth century produced in Britain a number of original observers in medical practice. In dermatologic circles one of the best remembered is Thomas Addison, who had a profound interest in dermatology and whose skill as a physician was of the highest caliber. He became “demonstrator of cutaneous diseases” at Guy's Hospital soon after his appointment as a physician in 1837 and thus became the first dermatologist at this historic medical institution.
