This article is the second of a two-part series reviewing antimicrobial agents that are used by the dermatologist. In part I we reviewed β-lactam antibiotics and related compounds. In this section we again emphasize some newer agents (macrolides, fluoroquinolones) as well as some of the more commonly employed older agents (rifamycins, tetracyclines, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and clindamycin). Learning objective

At the conclusion of this learning activity, the participant should understand the various classes of antimicrobial agents being employed in dermatology practice. He or she should become familiar with antimicrobial activity, clinical indications, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, adverse effects, and dosing schedules of these agents.
