Impact of cardiac rehabilitation in LDL cholesterol level - 06/01/20

Introduction |
Cardiac rehabilitation consists of measures that allow a patient to recover their functional capacity through physical exercise and secondary prevention measures. The aim of our study is to evaluate the impact of cardiac rehabilitation on LDL cholesterol level.
Materials and methods |
It's a retrospective study, including 303 patients admitted in cardiac rehabilitation center, in our Hospital. All of them had clinical examination, electrocardiogram, transthoracic echocardiography, biological test and Ergospirometry.
Result |
The average age of patients was 61.06±11.6 years, with male predominance, they have more than three cardiovascular risk factors, dominated by Hypertension and diabetes, they have overweight with BMI to 26.2±6,9kg/m2, clinical examination is normal, LDL cholesterol level was 0.82±0,3mg/l, transthoracic echocardiography shows preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (53.7±13.5%) After 20 sessions of cardiac rehabilitation, they have decreased in BMI (24.4±8.3kg/m2, P:0,01), a significant decrease in LDL cholesterol level to 0.78±0.2mg/l (P: 0,05), they had an improvement in the maximal work load (from 94.84±33.5 to 114.37±40,3watt, P:0.01) and VO2max (from 19.9±5.1 to 26.9±6.9ml/kg/min, P:0.02).
Conclusion |
This study demonstrated that cardiac rehabilitation is clearly benefic for patients to improve their LDL cholesterol level and their exercise capacities.
