Prevalence and factors associated with anemia in patients with heart failure in Sub-saharan Africa, Cameroon - 06/01/20

Background |
Heart failure has several comorbidities including anemia which is an independent factor of mortality and hospitalization but data on the topic are scarce in our context.
Purpose |
We aimed to determine the prevalence and determinants of anemia in heart failure.
Methodology |
We conducted a cross-sectional study from January to April 2018. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin <12g/dl in women and <13g/dl in men. Light anemia was defined as hemoglobin in the range of 10 to 11.9g/dl in women and 10 to 12.9g/dl in men. Moderate anemia and severe anemia were respectively defined by a hemoglobin level of between 8 and 9.9g/dl and then below 8g/dl in men and women.
Results |
We included 109 (55% female) patients in our study. The median age [interquartile range] was 65 [54–73] years. The mean hemoglobin level was 12.28±1.89g/dl, 12.73±1.92g/dl in men and 11.91±1.81g/dl in women (P=0.054). The prevalence (95% confidence interval) of anemia was 49.5% (40.4–58.7) with 51% (36.7–65.3) in men and 48.3% (35–61.7) in women (P=0.848). About 82.4% of patients had mild anemia, 17.6% moderate anemia and 5.6% severe anemia. The determinant of anemia [odds ratio, (95% CI)] was the treatment by ACE inhibitors [5.8, (1.6-20.7); P=0.007].
Conclusion |
Anemia is an important and frequent comorbidity in heart failure in our context.
