As the age of onset of bipolar disorders seems to decrease, mood stabilizers are a complex category. This communication will draw an overview on the indications of mood stabilizers among adolescents suffering from bipolar disorders. Lithium whose prescription knows a renewal of interest among adolescents has been the first drug to be licensed (from the age of 12 in the USA, and from the age of 16 in France). Among anticonvulsivants, the prescription of valproate is now very limited because of the very high teratogenic risk among young female patients. And as for antipsychotics, they are often chosen because of their supposed better tolerance profil. Finally, we will also focuse on the importance of compliance and therapeutic alliance that are major issues among young bipolar patients.
