Discussion |
Conclusion |

Introduction |
Research on creativity is flourishing, particularly in the psychiatric and psychopathological fields. Measures of creativity in French are rare and limited because of the time they require to be completed and rated. The purpose of this study is to translate and verify the Epstein Creativity Competencies Inventory for Individual (ECCI-i), a short and valid scale of creativity, usable for large-scale research as well as for patient evaluation.
Method |
From May until July 2018, two hundred and eighty participants from the general population were included in this study. We assessed the creative personality with the Adjective Check List-Creativity and the openness to experience personality trait with the French version of the Big Five Inventory. Furthermore, participants had to reply to a socio-demographical questionnaire, which included items about: considering oneself as an artist; practicing an art; expressing creativity; frequent expression of creativity. Participants had access to the questionnaire only after having given their free and informed consent. To answer our question, we used: Pearson's correlations between items, dimensions, and the total score of the scale; a calculation of the coefficient of Cronbach's alpha; Pearson's correlations between creativity (ECCI-i) and its theoretical predictors (creative personality and openness); t test for distinguishing between artists, art practitioners, and creative people.
Results |
The average age was 35.1 (±12,7) and 78.6% of the participants were women. The structure of ECCI-i-FR seems to be articulated in the same way as the original version. Moreover, the test had a strong internal consistency (α=.82). The translation instrument makes it possible to significantly identify the artistic participants (t=18,11; p<.001) from those who are not, those who practice an art (t=20,46; p<.001) and those who express their creativity (t=8,45; p<.001). Creativity test scores (average=91,29±13,3; minimum=55, maximum=129) correlate significantly with those obtained from the creative personality (r=.42; p<.001), depression (r=−.21; p<.001), and the open personality trait (r=.58; p<.001).
Discussion |
The translation process carried out suggests a satisfying adaptation of the ECCI-i-FR in the French language; moreover, our results show a good concurrent and nomological validity as well as a structure and satisfactory reliability. With the reunification of our observations, it appears the concept evaluated by the ECCI-i-FR is that of creativity.
Conclusion |
The French version of the ECCI-i is a reliable and valid questionnaire to assess creativity and skills. This test should make research on creativity and psychopathology accessible, for the researcher as for the practitioner.
