Abstract |
Our first encounter with death is a key moment in our lives. The effect of this encounter depends on different factors, including the stage of cognitive and emotional development when it happens. The concept of death becomes cognitively fixed by about the age of seven. When this first encounter happens to a child during pregnancy or in the early years of life, only with just a mother’s belief that this child could die can create a physiological reaction which becomes stuck in the body of both mother and child, creating a feedback loop.
Knowing how our body tries to deal with the first encounter with death can help us create specific interventions to resolve these kinds of physical symptoms, ones that might otherwise remain unknown.
