Who doesn’t want to be happy in this world? Everyone is looking for ways and means to attain happiness. So, if happiness is that important, we need to understand the variables, which should be focused upon so that more and more people can become happy. It is important to manage and strike a balance between the two dimensions of life: work and family, which, in turn, may influence one's happiness. There are numerous factors affecting the work–life balance viz: work hours, flexibility in working hours, overtime paid, gender, etc. This descriptive research is based on the impact of work–life balance on the subjective happiness of 206 doctors as their profession demands non-structured working hours. Findings were analysed using SPSS and AMOS.

The paper explores the impact of work–life balance of doctors on subjective happiness as they undergo work–family conflict and family–work conflict, given the unscheduled and long working hours as demanded by their profession.

The findings of the paper suggest that since flexibility in working hours is not possible in case of doctors as they have to attend the emergency duties also during odd and unscheduled hours of the day, paid overtime tries to compensate their non-scheduled working hours, but it leads to stress and dissatisfaction; especially in case of female doctors, it is higher in comparison to male doctors. The findings also suggest the reasons for the stress among female doctors, which can be taken care of by the hospitals. The paper captures the role stress of female clinicians caused due to time constraint as demanded by their profession. They have to take call from the patients as and when required. There are certain emergency calls received during odd hours, but cannot be avoided by the doctors.
