The Rancho Los Amigos Post Traumatic Head Injury Assessment and Management Scale, developed in 1972 in California, is widely used with adult patients. Although translated into several languages, no French version was currently available. The objective of this project was therefore to carry out the French translation of the The Rancho Levels of Cognitive Functioning and the associated Guide for Family and Friends in order to implement them in French-speaking rehabilitation settings caring for moderate to severe head trauma patients. The original English-language documents were translated by three independent researchers and then back translated to help identify gaps. The translated version was submitted to expert consultants (10), then to staff (10) and relatives of patients (10) who would be likely to use it, in order to ensure clarity. The current project did not aim to validate the translated tool. In the end, all the statements obtained a sufficient rate of agreement and several comments were collected and then analyzed. Minimal changes were made to the original French translation based on these comments after analysis and consensus among members of the research team. The French-speaking scale and guide obtained at the end of this project will allow caregivers and families of traumatic brain injuries to identify with a standardized tool the level of cognitive status in order to quickly select the recommendations to apply. This will optimize the rehabilitation and prognosis of these patients in different French-speaking rehabilitation settings.
