What young people have to say about sex work? An exploration - 26/11/22
Summary |
Sex work has defined as the provision of sexual services for money or goods. Since sex work is considered one of India's oldest professions, it is regarded as a highly stigmatised profession. Understanding youth's perception will help determine the current status of sex work in society and the stigma existing in society. A survey was conducted among 187 young adults within the age range of 18–30, selected by random sampling, using an online semi-structured questionnaire to understand the attitude toward sex work in four broad areas which are general perception about sex work, attitude towards sex workers, attitude towards people who buy sex, the legal status of sex work to address the issue stated. Altogether the study points out a shift in the general negative attitude or stigma existing in sex work. The results indicate that young adults possess less stigmatised attitude towards sex work and sex workers, and supporting the legalisation of sex work even though they have less legal awareness. Religious status plays a significant role in the attitude towards sex work, while education and gender do not.
