Sexual addiction in Italy: a national research and a screening inventory - 27/06/08

The Italian Association for Sexological Research (Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca in Sessuologia - AIRS) has promoted a survey for the evaluation of Sexual Addiction in Italy.
Materials and methods |
Questionary form:“Sexual Addiction Inventory SAI/2” by Franco Avenia. The questionary has a phenomenologycal structure, highlighting behaviours and experienced, in order to show Sexual Addiction as a peculiar way of existence.
The SAI/2 is formed by 38 questions with closed answers (yes/no).
Method |
random interview whit written answers.
Place: Italy: 10 provinces.
Results |
Submitted questionaries: 1556.
Validated questionaries: 1046.
Statistical sample: 1046 adults: 53.5 women (564), 46.5 men (482).
Observed levels of Sexual Addiction in the all sample: 6% (10% men, 2% women).
Sexual Addiction related to education level: primary school 9,9%; high school 6,8%; university 4,7%.
Singles show an higher level of sexual Addiction (8%) if compared to subjects with partner.
As far as age related results, the highest level of Sexual Addiction is founded between 36 and 50 years old.
Conclusions |
The presence of Sexual Addiction in Italy is noticeable, so it should be immediately studied and managed by the public authorities. After the conclusion of the survey, the questionary SAI/2 by Franco Avenia demonstrated to be a useful screening instrument “of first level” for Sexual Addiction.
