Neurosexology. In symposium: a nordic approach to sexology - 27/06/08
Résumé |
Objective |
One part of clinical sexology in the Nordic countries, and especially in Sweden, has focused on neurology as useful perspective concerning clinical sexual issues.
The aim of this paper is to give a clinical neurological perspective on sexual problems and dysfunctions.
Design and method |
Neurological factors play a role in a number of clinical conditions associated with sexual symptoms. In lesions and disorders of the nervous system this is often apparent, but also in other clinical situations a neurological aspect can be at hand.
A summary of recent publications in the field is the basis of the paper.
A survey of the field can be found on the following website:
Further, different neurological areas, lesions and disorders will be commented by the author from his own clinical experience, having worked in the field of sexology with a neurological perspective for thirty years.
Results |
The neurologistʼs clinical way of working, including taking a history with much attention to details, and systematically correlating the clinical findings to the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, constitutes a useful model. Neurological findings are significant in many cases of sexual problems and dysfunctions.
Conclusion |
Attentions should be given to the neurological aspects of sexual symptoms in many clinical conditions. Evaluation by a neurologist with an interest in the field of sexology can be clarifying in many situations. Neurology offers a systematic way of analysing and understanding many sexual symptoms and dysfunctions, and can contribute to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
