Sex and antidepressants: something new under the sun? - 27/06/08
Résumé |
It is well-known that treatment-emergent sexual dysfunctions occur with many antidepressive compounds. In Europe, SSRI agents are nowadays becoming part of usual prescriptions even by general practitioners treating anxiety, affective and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Sexual problems have been described as the “unspoken side effects of AD”. Adverse effects are not often reported by the patients and they may be an understimated cause of non-compliance. Several strategies may be beneficial in overcoming them: waiting for the development of tolerance, dose reduction, delayed in-taking, drug holydays, adjuvant treatment, natural compounds and changing to a different psychotropic drug. Nevertheless a psychological approach, such as behavioural strategies to improve sexual technique and individual or couple therapy, should always be considered as a possible integration. A critical review of the current literature is provided and new highlights are given.
