The way forwards with the obsession with the penis - 27/06/08
Résumé |
Men and women have been obsessed with the penis for as long as records exist. The impact that culture and society has upon the sense of self worth of men is hard to quantify. However certain attributes are deemed to be important in defining masculinity including the capacity to earn money, win battles through good muscular form, be witty and charming through intellectual capacity and to father healthy offspring through virility. Large is deemed essential in all senses and so the man who fails to achieve these expectations may consider himself to be less worthy.
Capacity to satisfy a partner, is therefore possible only with a large penis! Superiority over men whose penis does not fit gladiator proportions means that many men become focused on the size of their penis, This happens rather than acknowledging the limited reality of their perception of the needs of their culture and in particular those of their partner.
Helping men with their obsession of the penis is often clinical frustrating as the male seeks only to enhance the size of his penis and to combat the (male) therapist! Clinicians must help men find inner strength as well as mutual respect to accommodate difference with satisfaction and admiration. Crucially the man must love himself and have sufficient esteem and confidence to interact favourably with his aspired partner but without arrogance or narcissism. To adore and admire, to celebrate and to speak aloud if necessary about his penis can help overcome the obsession around size and need for largeness. Practical strategies will be explored further within the lecture.
