The purpose of this study is to present preliminary data regarding sexual experience and preferences of members of the www.q500.no/ dating website. Data were collected during one day of January 2008 via the Q500 Internet website. A total of 1709 members of the Scandinavian Q500 dating website completed the questionnaire in the 24 hour time period. The sample consisted of 690 (40.4%) women and 1019 men (59.6%). Mean age of the participants was 41.2 years for women (SD = 11.0), and 40.3 for men (SD = 11.1). No significant difference in age was found (P > .05). The participants were asked to fill in a comprehensive questionnaire investigating, amongst other things, sexual experience and preferences. These data domains were investigated using both newly constructed questions as well as questions previously used in Nordic studies of sexuality. The results showed that compared to men, women reported perceiving themselves as significantly more sexually experienced than most people their age. Furthermore, statistically significantly more women than men reported to associate sex with feelings of being attractive, acknowledged, and loved. More men than women associated sex with having an orgasm (P < 0.001). More women than men expressed that emotional intimacy was important for sexual arousal (P < 0.001). The types of sexual activities most members reported as important were: long foreplays, vaginal stimulation, oral sex, and smells, tastes and sounds. Across most sexual activities significant gender differences were evident. The preliminary study points to gender differences in self-reported sexual experience and preference of individuals using and accessing the Q500, and possibly other dating sites. The practical implications of these results await further testing, analysis and evaluation.
