T05-O-11 Sexuality and chronic illness: a patients perception - 27/06/08
Résumé |
Sexual problems in persons with chronic disease often lead to anxiety, marital discord,. It is the responsibility of all health care professionals to inquire about sexuality
We try to demonstrate this allegation via 2 surveys performed by French association ADIRS among 2 groups of patients with chronic disease: COPD (group1), diabetes (group 2)
In group1, 7000 questionnaires have been sent to patients who were members of specific associations. In group 2,1000 Questionnaires have been sent to patients, member of French diabetic association (AFD)
In group 1, 468 men completed the questionnaire.214 men (45.3%) describe sexual problems. Among men, 144 (77%) describe erectile dysfunction; 117 (62.5%) estimated it altered quality of life. 116 confirmed the sexual problem must be evoked by medical team. Only 23 (12.3%) said that health care professionals correctly managed the sexual problems. In group 2, 303 patients have replied. Among men, 177 ( 58.4% ) describe erectile dysfunction. 134 ( 44.2%) estimated it altered quality of life. 201 confirmed the sexual problem must be evoked by medical team. Only 13 (4%) said that health care professionals correctly managed the sexual problems.
In these studies, 40 to 60% of patients with chronic illness described a deterioration of quality of life due to sexual problems. Even if they don’t want a treatment, 30% of the patients in each group want simple information about their own problem.
