T07-P-03 Evaluation of the quality of life and sexual functioning of women using oral hormonal contraceptive - Yasmin - 27/06/08

Background |
Yasmin - contraceptives containing derivatives of drospirenone facilitated high contraceptive efficacy with satisfactory cycle stabilization, tolerance, elimination of menstrual discomfort, as well as regulation of sebaceous gland secretion and acne reduction.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of 30Ωg ethinylestradiol and 3mg drospirenone oral contraceptive on the quality of life and sexual functioning of women.
Methods |
61 women using 30Ωg ethinylestradiol and 3mg drospirenone oral contraceptives were qualified to the study as the research group. The control groups consisted of 65 women using a different type of oral contraceptives (Control Group I) and 50 women using no contraception (Control Group II). Questionnaire was used as a research tool in this study. It included the socio-demographic part, a part dedicated to contraception and validated scales: Short Form-36 Health Survey, Female Sexual Function Index and Female Sexual Scale.
Results |
Quality of life parameters for women using Yasmin were higher than for the control groups and statistically significant in the aspect of improved general health and mood (p<0.01), energy/fatigue (p<0.05) and emotional well-being (p<0.05). Women on Yasmin therapy showed better sexual functioning, particularly in the sexual arousal domain (p<0.006). According to SFK-K scale, sexual dysfunctions were diagnosed in 66.2% of Control Group I, 72% of Control Group II and 48.3% of Yasmin Group (CHI2 test p<0.02).
Conclusions |
Yasmin increase female quality of life through improved general health and mood, energy and vitality as well as in the emotional-psychological sphere. A beneficial effect on sexual functioning was also revealed in the Yasmin Group.
