T09-O-06 Psycological and sexual aspects of sterility: an Italian experience - 27/06/08

Objective |
To determine differences in emotional status (anxiety and depression) and marital satisfaction in unfertile couples before and after their first cycle of IVF and intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI).
Design and Method |
50 couples recruited in our Fertility Department at a University Hospital of Pisa, before their first treatment cycle of IVF or ICSI. Questionnaires on psychological factors were administered 3 to 10 days before the start of their first treatment cycle. We would evaluate state anxiety, depression, mood, and marital satisfaction.
Result(s) |
there was no significant difference in anxiety status between group of men and goupr of women., there was no significant difference between couples that obtained pregnancy and couples that failed. It is important underlying that was present a significant correlation between anxiety status and depression status. The cause of sterility influence the anxiety status (HADS scale; P=0.005), the major difference was releaved in couples with a diagnosis of infertility due bothe partners.
Conclusion |
Differences in emotional status in unfertile couples were present before treatment and became more apparent after the first IVF and ICSI cycle. There were no differences in emotional status between the women who underwent IVF and those who underwent ICSI.
While we reported marginally more distress during treatment in men involved in ICSI than in those involved in IVF.
