T10-O-09 Sociodemographic characteristics and self-esteem in a group of pregnant adolescents - 27/06/08
Résumé |
The objective of our study is trying to answer the question why some girls get pregnant, while others in similar circumstances do no fall pregnant at an early age. Our population consists of 120 girls, 60 pregnant (group I) and 60 non-pregnant (group II). To study our population we use a self-report Questionnaire, with sociodemographic characteristics, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. From the more significant socio- demographic results we salient the following: mean age of group I was 16.2±1.2 y; group II mean age was 16.2±1.1 y. Mothers of group I had a mean age of 38.3±5.5; mothers of group II had 42.9±6.2 y. We found statistically significant differences in the age of their mothers (F=18.4; p. 001), being mothers’age of group I significantly smaller than group II. In group I only 13 girls were living with their parents, while in group II, 36 of them were living with both parents (X2=36.170; p. 001). Only 29 of group I admitted having sexual relationships. In relation with the level of education, adolescents of group I present low levels comparing with group II (Mann Whitney Test = 1273; P = 002). Group I Self-esteem show statistically significant higher scores than group II (F = 5.43; p=0.27).
We can say that higher scores of self-esteem of adolescents group I may result in their need for self- affirmation, as in fact to have a baby is the only one life project; as it was with their mothers.
