T10-O-19 The wellbeing of the sextherapist - 27/06/08
Résumé |
Teaching sexology in Europe emphasizes learning of theoretical concepts and development of therapeutical skills.
Sextherapy and / or couple therapy is working with human beings, i.e. a burdening, exhausting profession that needs long acting vitality of the therapist himself / herself.
Objective |
This paper will describe specific risk factors of the work-life-balance of sex therapists. According to W. Schmidt (2005) work is not limited to professional activities. Work includes all activities that promote enjoying life as a meaningful life history (i.e. not only a successful career).
Method |
Six areas of life work satisfaction will be described:
• | 1. Being a friend to oneself as a lifelong way of self-development |
• | 2. Continuous care for friendship relations |
• | 3. Development of intimate partner and family relationships |
• | 4. Engagement in non-profit activities (social, cultural, ecological: “citizen work”) |
• | 5. Continuous attention to keep free time / sabbaticals as active periods of rethinking / reframing professional aims, targets and goals and harmonizing the work life balance |
• | 6. Regular periods of active reflection on the quality of life, happiness in life and work satisfaction in the perspective of life dreams in life span |
Results |
These six areas provide the inspirating life enthusiasm and the vital energy necessary for sex therapeutical work.
Conclusion |
This new concept of work stabilizes the well being of sex therapists and can prevent burn-out, depression and job addiction.
