T10-P-06 The role of mass media in predicting the sexual behaviour of female secondary school adolescents in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State, Nigeria - 27/06/08

Objective |
The objective of this study was to find out the role of mass media in predicting the sexual behaviour of the female secondary school adolescents.
Research Design |
Descriptive survey research design was used for the study.
Methods |
Two thousand and ten participants were used as sample for the study. Self-administered structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from the participants. Descriptive statistics of simple percentages and frequency counts and were used in analyzing the data collected and multiple regression was used in testing the hypothesis. Decision rule was set at 0.05 alpha level.
Results |
Out of the total number of respondents, those that watched television were 1988(98.9%) and those that watched on daily basis were 1402(69.8%) while those that watched for 1-3hours at a sitting were 1528(76%). Only 28(1.4%) respondents were not watching television at all. The respondents that browsed the internets was1024 (50.9%) and 986(49.1%) did not browse. Those that browsed on daily basis were 150(7.5%) and those that browsed occasionally were 874(43.5).
Mass media was found a significant predictor of the sexual behaviour of the female secondary school adolescents in Port Harcourt metropolis by this study. The t=7.375 statistically significant at p=.000 thus P <.05.
Conclusion |
Mass media was a significant predictor of adolescent sexual behaviour. There is need to monitor the activities of adolescents on the television and internet.
