The Spathiopterygidae are a Cretaceous family of minute wasps found in several amber deposits throughout the world, during the Barremian-Santonian interval. Here, we document a new occurrence of the family from the Albian-Cenomanian French amber of Charentes, the first for that region. Spathiopteryx ferrandprevotae sp. nov., described and figured based on an incomplete female specimen, represents the third species of Spathiopteryx Engel and Ortega-Blanco, 2013, all found throughout Europe. This discovery confirms that the family and the genus were widespread along the Western Tethyan margin around the mid-Cretaceous. New representatives of Spathiopteryx could be found in geographically and stratigraphically close European deposits such as the Santonian and Turonian ambers of France or the Barremian amber of England, and putative new spathiopterygid taxa are to be expected in poorly-screened ambers.

Les Spathiopterygidae sont une famille crétacée de guêpes millimétriques en taille, trouvée dans plusieurs gisements d’ambre à travers le monde entre le Barrémien et le Santonien. Nous documentons ici une nouvelle occurrence de cette famille dans l’ambre français de l’Albien-Cénomanien des Charentes, la première pour cette région. Spathiopteryx ferrandprevotae sp. nov., décrite et illustrée à partir d’un spécimen femelle incomplet, représente la troisième espèce de Spathiopteryx Engel et Ortega-Blanco, 2013, toutes trouvées en Europe. Cette découverte confirme que la famille et le genre étaient répandus le long de la marge occidentale de la Téthys vers le milieu du Crétacé. De nouveaux représentants de Spathiopteryx pourraient donc être trouvés dans des gisements européens géographiquement et stratigraphiquement proches, tels que les ambres turonien et santonien de France ou l’ambre barrémien d’Angleterre, et de nouveaux taxons de Spathiopterygidae sont potentiellement à découvrir dans d’autres gisements à ambre encore peu étudiés.
