Effect of Arnica Montana on postoperative edema, pain, and trismus following surgical extraction of impacted third molars: A double-blind clinical trial - 03/06/26
Abstract |
Objective |
This study evaluated Arnica Montana 's effect on postoperative edema, pain, and trismus after impacted third molar extraction.
Study design |
In a double-blind clinical trial, 10 patients scheduled for the extraction of symmetrically impacted maxillary or mandibular third molars were recruited. Patients received either Arnica Montana 12 CH or a placebo, starting 1 day before surgery and continuing for 7 days postoperatively. The alternate treatment was given during a second surgery after at least two weeks. Pain scores, maximum mouth opening, and facial measurements were recorded.
Results |
Pain scores were significantly lower in the Arnica Montana group on days 1–5 postoperatively, but not on days 6 and 7. The Arnica Montana group required fewer painkillers over the 7-day period. Facial swelling was significantly reduced on day 2 in the Arnica group, with no significant difference on day 7. Trismus, measured by mouth opening, was lower in the Arnica group but not statistically significant.
Conclusion |
Arnica Montana significantly reduces pain and swelling following impacted third molar removal but does not affect trismus.
