A lack of long-term follow-up to the terminal stages of life is a common healthcare problem for people with Alzheimerʼs disease. This problem is further exacerbated by the gap between the medical and the social interventions. Speech therapists have considerable experience in combining the patientʼs specific technical skills with environmental aids and support for the patient and caregivers in ways that are sustainable over the long term. For these reasons, speech and language specialists could play a greater and more valuable role in the treatment of Alzheimerʼs disease. Thanks to their knowledge, their field experience and their skills, speech therapists play a major part in cognitive and communication interventions and in assisting the patient and caregivers in adapting to the disease. These steps are achieved in close collaboration with all members of the casework team to implement a viable treatment plan based on care and assistance.
