High alcohol and low folate intake increases risk of major chronic disease in women - 24/08/11
Abstract |
Question |
Is there an association between alcohol and folate intake and the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer in women?
Study design |
Cohort study with 16 year follow-up.
Main results |
At low to moderate levels of alcohol intake (0 to 30g/day) there was no association between folate intake and relative risk of major chronic disease (p-value for trend ⩾0.15). Heavy drinkers (>30g/day alcohol) with low folate intake (<180μg/day) had the highest risk of major chronic disease. Compared with teetotal women consuming folate 400–599μg/day, heavy drinkers with low folate intake had increased risks of major chronic disease (RR 1.36, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.70). Increased risks of cardiovascular disease associated with heavy drinking decreased among women with low folate intake, however to reduce risks associated with cancer, folate intake of ⩾600μg/day was required.
Authors’ conclusions |
Women who consume high levels of alcohol and low levels of folate are at significantly increased risk of major chronic disease.
