KEY TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
Adenomyoma. : An isolated area of endometrial glands and stroma in the uterine musculature that can be identified grossly.
Adenomyosis. : The growth of endometrial glands and stroma into the uterine myometrium to a depth of at least 2.5 mm from the basalis layer of the endometrium.
Allodynia. : Hyperesthesia and pain induced by a nonpainful stimuli such as a cotton-tipped applicator.
Brenner Tumor. : A small, smooth, solid fibroepithelial tumor of the ovary. It may be benign or malignant.
Degeneration of a Myoma. : The process by which a myoma outgrows its blood supply and begins to necrose centrally. Forms of degeneration include hyaline, myxomatous, calcific, cystic, fat, and red degeneration.
Dermoid (Benign Cystic Teratoma). : A benign germ cell tumor that contains well-differentiated derivatives of all three germ cell layers.
Dysontogenetic Cysts. : Thin-walled cysts of embryonic origin.
Endometrial Polyp. : A localized outgrowth of endometrial glands and stroma projecting beyond the surface of the endometrium and including a vascular stalk.
Follicular Hematoma. : Follicular cysts filled with blood, usually from hemorrhage in the vascular theca zone.
Gartner’s Duct Cysts. : Cysts primarily of mesonephric origin found laterally in the vagina.
Hematometra. : A uterus distended with blood, secondary to partial or complete obstruction of any portion of the lower genital tract.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa. : A chronic infection involving skin, subcutaneous tissue, and apocrine glands.
Hidradenoma. : A rare, small, benign vulvar tumor originating from apocrine sweat glands.
Hydatid Cysts of Morgagni. : Pedunculated paratubal cysts found near the fimbriae of the oviduct.
Hydrometra. : A collection of clear fluid in the uterine cavity.
Hyperreactio Luteinalis. : Multiple theca lutein cysts causing bilateral ovarian enlargement during pregnancy.
Intravenous Leiomyomatosis. : An extremely rare condition in which benign smooth muscle fibers invade and slowly grow into the venous channels of the pelvis.
Itch–Scratch Cycles. : Repetitive cycles of itching leading to scratching. The scratching leads to excoriation, irritation, and healing, with subsequent irritation and itching.
Leiomyoma (Myoma or Fibroid). : A benign tumor of muscle cell origin found in any tissue that contains smooth muscle.
Leiomyomatosis Peritonealis Disseminata. : A benign disease with multiple small nodules over the surface of the pelvis and abdominal peritoneum, grossly mimicking disseminated carcinoma or sarcoma.
Lichenification. : Changes in the skin from chronic irritation, characterized by whiteness, thickening, and leathery appearance.
Luteoma of Pregnancy. : A rare, specific, benign, hyperplastic reaction of ovarian theca lutein cells during pregnancy.
Meigs’ Syndrome. : The constellation of symptoms of ascites and hydrothorax associated with a benign ovarian fibroma, resolving after the removal of the tumor.
Nabothian Cysts. : Cervical retention cysts lined by endocervical-type columnar cells.
Parasitic Myoma. : A myoma that outgrows its uterine blood supply and obtains a secondary blood supply from another organ, such as the omentum.
Prominence or Tubercle of Rokitansky. : The protrusion of solid elements of a dermoid into the cyst cavity.
Pruritus. : A symptom of intense itching with an associated desire to scratch.
Pyometra. : A collection of pus in the uterine cavity.
Struma Ovarii. : A specialized ovarian teratoma that consists of thyroid tissue as a major or exclusive component. Rarely, it may produce sufficient thyroid hormone to induce hyperthyroidism.
Submucosal Myoma. : A myoma located immediately below the endometrial lining.
Subserosal Myoma. : A myoma found just beneath the serosa of the uterus.
Syringoma. : A benign tumor of the eccrine sweat glands.
Vulvodynia. : A term describing chronic vulvar discomfort.
