Pressure ulcers in Denmark - 05/11/11
Abstract |
Pressure ulcer is perceived to be one of the geriatric syndromes and shares risk factors with frailty. Within the last decades, increased knowledge about prevention and treatment of pressure ulcer and technical pressure-relieving aids has developed. In recognition that pressure ulcer is to be handled in an interdisciplinary setting, multidisciplinary wound healing centers have developed. Nevertheless, pressure ulcer is still occurring regularly among patients admitted to hospitals and people being taken care of in home-settings. The aim of this paper is to describe the field pressure ulcer in Denmark. The organization of the area in hospitals and municipalities is delineated, and a recent work showing pressure ulcer still to be a considerable problem among hospitalized patients in Denmark, is referred. Malnutrition and immobilization are of great importance to avoid in terms of prevention of pressure ulcers. The Danish Quality Model is at present implemented in the Danish hospitals focusing on avoidance of adverse event and relevant nutritional support and physical rehabilitation. Danish geriatricians primarily deal with elderly suffering acute medical conditions and do not regard treatment of pressure ulcer as a geriatric core activity, but do still keep focus on risk assessment to prevent appearance of pressure ulcer. The perspectives for the future are to continue the focus on the issue and ensure guidelines to be implemented in everyday practice, both in hospital systems and home-care settings.
