Background.- The development of the chapters on mental disorders of the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Disorders (ICD-11) is currently underway and will need to assess the current use of ICD-10 for the classification of mental disorders, and to identify scientific studies of putative relevance for the revision process. Aims: To obtain information on the use of ICD-10 or other classification systems of mental disorders in Europe in mental health statistics and for administrative purposes like health services remuneration, and to identify German-language scientific publications of possible significance for revising ICD-10.

Methods.- We performed an overview of the use of ICD-10 in Europe by addressing national psychiatric societies, and screened ten German-language scientific journals for information of possible significance for revising ICD-10.

Results.- We found that 23 out of 26 responding European countries used ICD-10 for classifying mental disorders in these areas, and identified the research areas of dimensional assessments and the possible need to add new diagnostic entities like a chronic pain syndrome, internet addiction or stalking, as areas which may be of interest for developing ICD-11.

Conclusions.- Our work points to several areas in which experience published in German-language scientific journals may be of importance for revision ICD-10. Similar studies in other language-areas would be warranted to assure that DSM-5 and ICD-11 do not miss important information from nonEnglish-language publications.
