The WHO Collaborating Centre for Training and Research of Mental Health of Madrid (Spain) has been involved in the development, translation into Spanish evaluation, diffusion, training of users, updating of the Chapter F of the ICD-10 in Spanish language, in Spain and in Latin American countries. Our basic strategy has been to combine the efforts in research (i.e., field trials), publication and dissemination, training (in collaboration with Spanish medical societies and with the World Psychiatric Association), development of training materials to be used in other settings (slides, videos, case vignettes, role-playing…), involving all versions and potential types of users and, of course, finding financial support from the industry and from the health care administration. Over 160 psychiatrists and over 1,200 General Practitioners from Spanish speaking countries participated in the field trials. The main outcome has been a series of publications such as: Clinical descriptions and diagnostic guidelines (the “Blue Book”), Conversion tables between ICD-9 and ICD-10, Diagnostic criteria for research (the “Green Book”), Multiaxial formulation, Primary Care Version and Primary Care version Spanish adaptation. 4,000r free copies of the Blue Book were distributed to 4,000 psychiatrists in Spain, practically to all of them, and to 3,000 in Latin America. The Spanish version of ICD-10 Chapter F follows exactly the original WHO English version although there is also a Cuban adaptation developed by psychiatrists of this country (the Third Cuban Glossary).
