Due to the demographics and politics of New Zealand society, there have been a number of quite different empirical studies on psychiatric issues as they pertain to Maori, usually in comparison to European/Caucasian. Selected findings of these studies are summarized and discussed with some explanatory hypotheses for the cross cultural differences, particularly of the phenomenology of psychiatric presentations. The implications of these for diagnosis and classification in psychiatry are noted and potential research areas highlighted.
