The category of anxiety neurosis was the first nosographic innovation that Freud (1895) introduced in the psychopathological field of his time. By its conceptualization, the anguish will be redefined as a crucial problem in the dominion of the neurosis, and the sexual factor will be considered as the central element of its etiology. Nevertheless, the assumptions associated to the definition of the sexual factor will produce an intense debate, since Freud will postulate that it is possible to distinguish an anguish defined in somatic terms (anxiety neurosis) from an anguish referred to the participation of the psychic factor (psychoneurosis), depending if it deals with incomplete sexual practices or it is referred to sexuality of phantoms or memories. This article will seek to illustrate why the anxiety neurosis can be regarded as a fundamental part of the controversy between Sigmund Freud and Wilhelm Stekel. The debates about anguish, developed in the frame of Wiener and the Stekel’s thesis (1908) anxiety states of nervousness, can be considered as precursory elements of the resignation of the collaborator and also defined as a great contribution to the knowledge of the early period of the Freudian theory of the anguish.
