Cognitive Psychotherapy: from human information processing to the logic of distant equilibrium complex systems |
We focus attention on the evolution of the cognitive approch to therapy indicating a series of evolutionary steps that have been found in human information processing logic, in the constructionist approch and in the theory of complex systems far from equilibrium.
Having described and discussed the conceptual approaches of human information processing, adapted by the Aaron Beck school, and developed constructively above all in Italy by Vittorio Guidano, the authors present a new and original proposition, both conceptual and clinical, elaborated in Catania by Tullio Scrimali and Liria Grimaldi and founded on the logic of complex systems far from equilibrium.
Such a conceptualization departs from the thematic formulation of the modular brain and the coalitionial mind.
Four processes of understanding are described and defined: tacit understanding, explicit understanding, procedural understanding, and machiavellian understanding, self-unified and supported by memory and meta-cognition systems, defined personal identity and narrative.
Subsequently, an original psychopathological theorization proposed with particular reference to schizophrenia.
In the final part of the article a clinical therapeutic and rehabiliative approach is developed concisely, characterized by the previously described conceptualization, and that has received experimental confirmation by the Institute of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Catania.
