Since its introduction in the early 1960s as a topical chemotherapeutic agent, 5-fluorouracil (FU) has become increasingly accepted because of its efficacy, economy, good cosmetic results, and relative absence of side effects in treating many precancerous conditions and certain benign and malignant tumors and dermatoses. With wider use of FU, new indications and a greater array of side effects have precipitated an avalanche of literature, a review of which is the subject of this paper.
