“Mesozoic Palaeoceanography in response to Palaeogeographic and Palaeoclimatic forcings”

Rodolfo Coccioni, Taniel Danelian
Urbino, Italy
Paris, France

The international workshop on Mesozoic Palaeoceanography was held in Paris (University Pierre and Marie Curie) on 10 and 11 July 2003. Nearly 100 scientists, who came largely from Europe, N. Africa and the USA, participated in this meeting.

The main purpose of the workshop was to inform participants about advances in Mesozoic Palaeoceanographic reconstructions, based on the integration of sedimentary, geochemical and palaeontological data. The four micropalaeontological contributions included in this issue reflect the continuing strong interest of the scientific community in exploring the Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) and the response of the marine biosphere to these profound environmental perturbations.

Coccioni et al. examine the record of planktonic foraminifera at Angles (SE France), a section that is well dated by Ammonites. They focus on the first radiation of morphotypes with radially elongated chambers, a consistent component of foraminiferal assemblages found in coincidence with OAEs. Danelian et al. establish for the first time the presence of OAE1a and OAE1b in the Ionian zone of Albania and discuss the palaeoceanographic significance of their studied micropalaeontological and sedimentary record. Luciani et al. explore the record of the Albian OAE1b and OAE1c across a palaeobathymetric transition between the shallow-water Apulia carbonate Platform and the deep-water Ionian Basin, as preserved in outcrops of the Gargano promontory. Finally, Musavu-Moussavou et al. present a high-resolution radiolarian study across the Bonarelli Level at its type locality and synthesize all the available data for this plankton group in the Umbria-Marche Basin (central Italy).
