Summary

Protein metabolism (synthesis and breakdown) is energy requiring. Therefore, a reduced energy intake results in a decreased nitrogen balance. Carbohydrates and fat are nitrogen sparing to the same extent. However, their mechanisms of action (hormones, substrate competition) are different. The specific effects of the fatty acids chain length are also considered.
