Pathologic basis of breast imaging - 01/12/09
Résumé |
Objectifs pédagogiques |
By the end of this lecture we should to be able to understand normal breast anatomy, and both benign and malignant processes as they relate to traditional imaging signs and pathologic changes.
Masses and calcifications will be stressed.
Messages à retenir |
The mass edge represents the aggressiveness of the underlying abnormality.
By analyzing the mass edge we can determine the likely benign or malignant nature of the mass.
Malignant masses have microlobulated, spiculated and indistinct edges while benign masses have smooth or mildly lobulated circumscribed edges.
The shape of the calcification represents a cast of an underling space. Benign spaces in the breast are smooth, round or tubular shaped, yielding smooth round and smooth rod shaped calcifications.
Malignant processes show irregular growth and necrosis, giving irregular shaped calcifications.
