This book is written by two physicians, a neurosurgeon (D.L.K.) and a radiologist (J.R.J.). It gives a thorough survey of degenerative conditions involving spine. Main topics are: diagnosis of intervertebral diseases, strategy for imaging, advantages and pitfalls of surgical procedures including lumbar cages, cervical cages, prosthetic disc implants and dynamic intersegmental restabilization.

As readers can understand, authors' goals are focused on initial clinical signs and imaging of intervertebral degenerative diseases. Very clear and useful chapters concern diagnosis of early stages of intervertebral degenerative illness. As clinical findings are well known by any physician specialized in management of degenerative intervertebral evolution, the radiological aspects associated with this kind of illness must be highlighted. They constitute the major contribution of this book, and include classical X-rays aspects, computerized tomography, and axial loaded CT-scan, cine-axial loaded CT-scan, MRI study of the spine and weight-bearing dynamic MRI.

Surgical chapters give a complete survey of all devices available today for commercial purpose. Specific attention must be given to posterior lumbar intervertebral fusion (PLIF) using cages and bone substitutes. For cervical surgery, authors emphasize the low morbidity degree of anterior body fusions using cages and/or bone substitutes.

Modern and new treatments are exposed. Prosthetic disc implants can be evaluated by clinical series presented hereby. Of interest are surgical procedures of so-called dynamic restabilization, which are on the air and seem of particular value.

Indications for surgery are not so much outlined. Anywhere, this book is of great value for diagnosis of early stages of intervertebral degenerative diseases, and gives a lot of information about procedures available for surgical treatment of this uncomfortable illness.
