An overview of poxviruses - 02/09/11
Abstract |
The poxvirus family is a diverse and interesting group of viruses that affect both humans and animals. Poxviruses are epitheliotropic and therefore are of interest to the dermatologist. The genera of poxviruses known to affect humans are Orthopoxvirus, Parapoxvirus, Molluscipoxvirus, and Yatapoxvirus. The different poxviruses are reviewed, including their history, incidence, clinical presentation, and treatment. (J Am Acad Dermatol 2001;44:1-14.) Learning objective: At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants should be able to recognize the members of the family of poxviruses that affect humans and their cutaneous manifestations. Readers will become familiar with the history, epidemiology, and future considerations regarding poxviruses.
