Abstract

Neuronavigation is widely considered as a valuable tool during skull base surgery. Advances in neuronavigation technology, with the integration of augmented reality, present advantages over traditional point-based neuronavigation. However, this development has not yet made its way into routine surgical practice, possibly due to a lack of acquaintance with these systems. In this report, we illustrate the usefulness and easy application of augmented reality-based neuronavigation through a case example of a patient with a clivus chordoma. We also demonstrate how augmented reality can help throughout all phases of a skull base procedure, from the verification of neuronavigation accuracy to intraoperative image-guidance.

Résumé

La neuronavigation est largement admise comme un outil précieux dans la chirurgie de la base du crâne. Les progrès technologiques dans le domaine de la neuronavigation, intégrant la réalité augmentée, présentent des avantages sur la neuronavigation traditionnelle, qui est dépendante du pointeur. Cependant, ces avancées n’ont pas encore trouvé leur place dans la routine chirurgicale, possiblement car elles restent méconnues. Nous illustrons ici l’utilité et l’application aisée de la neuronavigation basée sur la réalité augmentée, à travers l’exemple d’un patient avec un chordome du clivus ; et nous démontrons l’aide que peut apporter la réalité augmentée durant toutes les phases d’une intervention de la base du crâne, depuis la vérification de la précision de la neuronavigation à l’orientation intra-opératoire guidée par images.
