Meningeal cryptococcosis following severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria |
We report a case of a meningeal cryptococcosis observed at D12 of a severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria. This severe attack was defined by coma with Glasgow score at 9, renal impairment treated by dialysis and hyperparasitemia. Risk factors for meningeal cryptococcosis were not identified. But it is possible that hidden cryptococcosis was awakened by immunodepression due to severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Four observations are reported in the literature: 2 associated with falciparum malaria, 1 with vivax malaria and the last with Kala-Azar and vivax malaria. All were due to Cryptococcosis neoformans . Recently certain authors emphasise the risk of opportunistic infections due to mycosis in severe falciparum malaria. Clinicians should be aware that the malaria patients can develop opportunistic infections, particulary, mycosal infections (invasive aspergillosis, disseminated candidiasis, meningeal cryptococcosis).
